On 2 February 2025, a blade from a wind turbine at a wind farm in the Kurinjipitiya area of Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka, detached and fell, destroying a storeroom and slightly damaging two nearby houses. No one was inside the storeroom at the time and no injuries were reported. Local residents alleged that the turbine, part of a wind farm operated by Senok Wind Power Pvt Ltd, had not been properly maintained despite being exposed to corrosive salt-laden coastal winds since it was installed over a decade earlier. According to reporting citing the Daily Mirror, the affected homeowner did not report the incident to police because the company agreed to pay compensation directly. The turbines at the site are reported to stand around 270 feet tall with blades around 190 feet long. The company operates five turbines in the area.
Residents allege inadequate maintenance of an ageing turbine exposed to salt-laden coastal winds for over a decade; this has not been independently confirmed by an official investigation.
