The Western substation supplying electricity to the Komani CBD and surrounding areas, including Madeira Park, Kings Park, Amberdale, New Rest, part of Bhede, the Army Base and Factory Road, caught fire at about 7am. The fire left the town area without electricity. BTW Majuba fire volunteers working with Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality extinguished the blaze. The cause was not clear. The municipality confirmed the incident and said a crisis committee would meet to seek a solution.

  1. Substation operators should maintain rapid coordination with local fire services.
  2. Municipalities need contingency plans to restore supply to essential services after substation loss.
