Around 3pm on a Saturday in June 2022 one of four transformers at the Yallah substation failed, causing multiple explosions and an oil fire. The blaze completely destroyed the unit and damaged surrounding infrastructure. Approximately 60 firefighters responded and contained the fire, securing around 100,000 litres of oil. The three remaining transformers continued to supply power with no impact on electricity supply to NSW residents. Nearby residents were advised to close windows and stay inside due to smoke. The operator estimates damage at between 6 and 10 million dollars and will replace the destroyed transformer using a strategic spare.

A mechanical failure of the transformer is under investigation by the operator.

  1. Substations with multiple parallel transformers can maintain supply during single-unit failures.
  2. Rapid response by fire services can limit oil fire spread and environmental release.
  3. Strategic spares and replacement programmes reduce downtime after catastrophic asset failures.
