What happened
A fire was reported on 24 October 2025 at the IT server building inside the Indian Space Research Organisation campus in Ahmedabad. The blaze is believed to have started on the third floor of a building near the campus outer gate at about 3 am. It gutted computers, networking devices and other IT equipment, and officials described substantial infrastructure loss. There is concern that data on damaged servers may have been lost.
Four fire tenders from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services attended and brought the fire under control after several hours. No injuries or deaths were reported. ISRO has opened an internal inquiry into the damage and whether stored data was affected.
Contributing factors
Fire officials suspect a short circuit, but a detailed investigation is still under way. The extent of damage to data centre systems, and whether any stored data was lost, had not been confirmed.
Lessons learned
- Ensure regular inspection and maintenance of electrical systems in data centre facilities.
- Maintain up-to-date backups of critical and mission data in geographically separate locations.
- Review fire detection and suppression coverage on all floors of server buildings.
