What happened
Areas on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, including Bopal, Shela and Sanand, experienced power disruptions over three days, according to DeshGujarat. The disruption followed the tripping of a GETCO 66 kV line between Vadavi and Bopal, which caused outages in Bopal, Shela and Sanand. A fire at the Bopal substation worsened the situation on a Saturday. Officials said there was no general power supply issue. An alternate 11 kV line was used to restore electricity supply.
A senior GETCO official acknowledged the inconvenience caused and said measures had been taken to prevent further outages. GETCO plans to install new 66 kV lines between Bhadaj and Science City, and between Sanand and Ghuma, to address rising demand and the strain on existing infrastructure.
Contributing factors
The source reports the tripping of the 66 kV line and the substation fire but does not state the cause of either. It links the disruption to rising demand and strain on the existing infrastructure, which GETCO said it would address with new lines.
Lessons learned
- Keep alternate feeders available so that supply can be restored quickly when a main line trips, as an 11 kV line was used here.
- Inspect and maintain substation equipment to reduce fire risk, and ensure site firefighting arrangements are in place.
- Plan network reinforcement ahead of demand growth in fast-growing outlying areas to reduce repeated outages.
