2025Published 2 Oct 2026
What happened
A major gas leak was reported at a QTS data centre site at 9540 Godwin Drive, just outside Manassas, Virginia, on 9 April 2025. Prince William County Fire and Rescue were dispatched after the leak was reported at 2:10pm local time. A fire service spokesman said it involved an 8-inch gas line and that leaks of that size take time to isolate and secure. The cause has not been reported, and it is not clear whether the line served an operating hall or a building still under development. No injuries or evacuations were known when the report was published. Traffic was affected on Route 28, Freedom Center Boulevard and Rixlew Lane.
Contributing factors
The cause of the leak has not been reported.
Lessons learned
- Large gas lines at data centre sites need isolation arrangements that emergency services can use without delay.
- Operators should be ready to support road management and public updates when a utility leak affects neighbouring roads.
- Until the cause is known, a reported site gas leak should be treated as an open investigation, not a confirmed equipment failure.
