What happened
A fire destroyed a wind turbine in a field near Stuart in Adair County, Iowa. The fire began on a Tuesday morning and consumed the nacelle. It burned so intensely that the turbine, described as 22 storeys tall, was destroyed and one blade fell to the ground. Flames spread into the cornfield below, producing a large smoke plume visible for miles. Emergency crews from Adair and surrounding towns attended but had no equipment to reach the top of the turbine. Officials said the field had already been harvested and freshly ploughed, which limited further spread. MidAmerican Energy said it did not have a cause and was investigating.
Contributing factors
A local resident described conditions as dry and windy. No cause has been reported.
Lessons learned
- Site emergency plans must account for fires at heights beyond the reach of standard ground equipment.
- Harvest timing and field conditions around turbines should be considered in fire-spread risk assessments.
- Distant visual monitoring can support early public warnings when smoke from an asset fire is visible for miles.
