What happened
On the evening of 29 August 2024, the City of Boulder City reported a large transformer fire at the Mead Substation, at Interstate 11 and mile marker nine. Black smoke was visible across the Las Vegas Valley. Boulder City Fire, assisted by Henderson Fire, later said the situation was under control. Officials reported no injuries and no power outages. Residents were asked to avoid the area, and people with respiratory concerns were advised to take care outdoors because of smoke. Western Area Power, which owns the transformers, provided a statement, but the report did not reproduce it. The cause was not reported.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire was not reported.
Lessons learned
- A transformer fire can send heavy smoke well beyond the site, so public advice should separate smoke caution from any claim about injuries or supply.
- Confirm early which organisation owns the equipment and whether customers have lost power, to avoid confusion during a visible fire.
- Neighbouring fire services can support a substation fire, but the duration and cause may still be unknown after the fire is brought under control.
