What happened
A nearby transformer fire broke out at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday and cut power to Windsor City Hall Square, closing services at 350 and 400 City Hall Square for the day. Closed services included Service Canada, Service Ontario, the Ontario Court of Justice, provincial offences administration and several city departments. The fire was away from buildings and did not cause further damage. A back-up generator supplied emergency power only: lifts were not running and ordinary outlets were not operational. No restoration time was available. The source does not mention injuries.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire was not reported.
Lessons learned
- Treat emergency-only back-up generation as limited, and identify in advance which public services can continue remotely.
- Tell the public which offices are closed and which alternative channels, such as an app or a reduced contact centre, remain open.
- Do not give a restoration time until the repair outlook is known.
