Fire reported near a transformer in Mokpo

What happened

Around 16:00 on 25 September 2026, a fire was reported at a transformer in Okam-dong, Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. A translated news report said flames were rising among discarded boxes near the transformer and that the situation could have led to further incidents, including a chain explosion or a power outage. A student at a nearby academy noticed smoke, asked a passerby to report the fire, used a fire extinguisher and then applied water. The report said the fire was out within five minutes and that no one was injured. It is not yet clear whether the transformer itself ignited, or whether supply was affected.

Contributing factors

Discarded boxes were reported near the transformer. The cause of the fire has not been reported.
