What happened

A fire broke out at the Anderbolt substation in Boksburg in the early hours of 16 October 2024 after a transformer tripped. The City of Ekurhuleni emergency services responded and the extent of damage is being assessed. Power remains off in Ravenswood, Westwood, Eveleigh, Boksburg North, Jansen Park, Anderbolt, Cason and parts of Beyers Park with no estimated restoration time yet.

Lessons learned

Treat all electrical networks as live during restoration work after a substation incident.
Provide regular public updates via social media and SMS during prolonged outages.
