A solar energy system caught fire on the roof of an industrial building on the BR-101 highway in Araquari, Santa Catarina, on 16 January 2024. The fire affected approximately 30 square metres of roof. The fire service used 15 litres of water, a truck and three hose lines to extinguish the flames from a distance. After initial containment the service waited for a platform to reach the photovoltaic panels and prevent reignition. The cause remains under investigation by local authorities.

  1. Electrical cables in photovoltaic systems must be sized in accordance with applicable technical standards including NBR 5410, NBR 16690 and NBR 16612.
  2. Connectors must be crimped only with manufacturer-specified tools; improvised tools must not be used.
  3. Periodic maintenance must include inspection and retightening of all electrical connections.
