What happened
A large fire broke out at the Fazenda Solar Órigo, a solar farm beside the CE-257 road near the roundabout in Santa Quitéria, Brazil, on the afternoon of Friday 9 October 2026. The source describes it as the largest solar farm in the municipality by number of panels, with hundreds installed. Flames started at about 11:30. Strong winds and high temperatures allowed the fire to spread, destroying numerous high-value items of equipment, and it moved towards nearby properties, causing considerable concern.
A water tanker from a company helped attempt to bring the fire under control. As of publication, no causes had been confirmed and the extent of the damage had not been established.
Contributing factors
Strong winds and high temperatures are reported as factors in the spread of the fire. The cause of the fire was not confirmed in the source.
Lessons learned
- Operators of large ground-mounted solar arrays should plan for wind-driven fire spread in hot conditions, including firebreaks around arrays and site boundaries.
- Operators should agree fire response arrangements with local fire services and water tanker suppliers before an incident, including reliable water supply for large sites.
- Operators should maintain separation from neighbouring properties and document fire response plans for distributed generation sites.
