KSEB distribution transformers catch fire from overload

What happened

Kerala State Electricity Board transformers caught fire or suffered fuse failure after local demand exceeded their rated capacity. Six transformers were lost in Thiruvananthapuram district. Similar overload conditions were reported in Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts, where network upgrades had been delayed. The incidents coincided with record state-wide consumption of 110.10 million units and a peak of 5,506 MW. Contributing load came from widespread installation of air conditioners, electric vehicle charging and domestic motor pumps during evening and night hours.

Contributing factors

Rapid growth in air-conditioner installations without notification to the utility, extended peak demand period into the early morning, electric vehicle charging during peak hours, and delayed reinforcement of distribution lines due to local protests.

Lessons learned

1. Utilities should enforce notification requirements for new high-load equipment before connection.
2. Distribution planning must account for simultaneous uptake of air conditioning and electric vehicles.
3. Early engagement with communities can reduce delays to capacity upgrades.
