What happened
A large brush fire broke out at Ashaway solar farm in Ashaway, Rhode Island, United States on the afternoon of 10 April 2024. Fire crews responded to reports of smoke in the solar field and found a grass fire burning under the solar panels. The fire affected approximately three acres. No damage was reported to the solar panels themselves. The incident remains under investigation.
Lessons learned
(1) Vegetation management beneath and around solar arrays should be reviewed regularly to limit fuel load for grass fires.
