Blade failure damages GE Cypress turbine at Björkvattnet wind project
EIR-1199Provisional entry. A single short report confirms a blade failure that damaged a 5.3MW GE Cypress turbine at Björkvattnet in northern Sweden, with the manufacturer analysing the cause; injuries, downtime and the root cause are not yet known. Next update: 24 September 2026.
On 3 September 2021, Recharge reported a blade failure that damaged a 5.3MW GE Cypress onshore turbine at the Björkvattnet wind project in northern Sweden. The manufacturer was analysing the root cause. Injuries, the extent of damage beyond the blade, and whether the turbine was in operation were not reported.
- A blade failure on a large onshore turbine can damage the machine and should prompt a manufacturer root-cause review before similar units return to service.
- Neighbouring turbines should be inspected and exclusion arrangements confirmed after a blade failure, including on a project already facing delay.
- Where only the fact of an ongoing manufacturer analysis is public, operators should not infer a specific defect from that account.
