Substation fire knocks out power to over a thousand Arkansas customers

A fire at the Southland Substation, served by North Arkansas Electric Cooperative, led to an outage that began in the early morning hours of Friday, cutting power to 1,153 member accounts. The suspected cause was lightning. Cooperative personnel deployed a mobile substation unit, made up of two semi-trailers supplied by Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation, which were connected on site, and supply was restored at around 12:45 a.m. Saturday. The substation, on Pebblecreek Drive off the Sheid-Hopper Bypass, is to be rebuilt over a period of months while the mobile unit temporarily serves the area. Injuries were not reported.
Lightning is reported as the suspected cause. No formal investigation findings have been reported.
