What happened

A fire broke out at the Enemalta substation in Mellieħa, Malta. Because the substation is located directly behind the Solana Hotel & Spa, staff and residents of the hotel were evacuated as a precaution. The fire damaged the low voltage panel, though the transformer, switchgear and other essential apparatus were not badly damaged. No injuries resulted from the incident. Parts of Mellieħa experienced a power outage for a short period, but supply was restored within an hour. Enemalta stated the cause was still being investigated, though it believed the fire broke out incidentally and was not deliberate. Repairs were reported almost complete the following day.
