Battery storage fire at solar plant in Jecheon, South Korea

On 17 October 2023 at around 17:40, a fire broke out in the battery energy storage system (ESS) attached to a solar power facility in Songhak-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. Fire crews responded after being alerted and took around five hours to extinguish the blaze, bringing it under control by approximately 22:40. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The fire damaged an internal area of about 43.56 square metres and destroyed roughly 300 solar modules. Local fire authorities estimated the property damage at approximately 1.22 billion Korean won. Police and fire investigators were reported to be examining the exact cause of the fire at the time of reporting.
