Explosion and fire at Chinchwad Extra High Voltage Substation, Pune disrupts power

A technical fault led to an explosion in a medium voltage current transformer and breaker unit at the Chinchwad Extra High Voltage Substation in Chinchwad, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Maharashtra, operated by Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission, triggering a fire around midday during normal operation. The fire was brought under control by firefighters shortly after ignition. The fault disrupted supply on multiple high voltage feeders connected to the site, cutting power to roughly 310,000 consumers across the metropolitan area. A metro rail system briefly lost its supply from a nearby substation as a knock on effect. Grid operators isolated the damaged bay and restored most consumers within a few hours using alternative feeders and routes, although around 125,000 consumers faced longer delays because of load constraints on the remaining network.
