What happened
A transformer fire on Highway 35 in Belmar, New Jersey, led to a power outage affecting parts of the town, according to the Belmar Police Department. JCP&L, the local utility, was on site to resolve the issue. Police said there was initially no estimated time for power restoration. JCP&L's outage tracker showed 883 customers in Belmar affected, and the utility estimated that power might be restored by noon. Several traffic lights were out across the town, and police advised drivers to take care when travelling. The report noted that the story may be updated as more information becomes available.

Lessons learned
- Monitor transformer condition, including temperature and oil quality, so that faults are found before they lead to fire.
- Give the public and local authorities clear restoration estimates and regular updates during outages.
- Coordinate with municipal authorities early during a feeder outage, because loss of traffic signals creates road safety risks.
