What happened
On 23 October 2026, a distribution box (transformer box) exploded on Suao New City South Road in Suao, Yilan County, Taiwan, as a typhoon approached the area. According to the report, the incident happened at about 15:50 during strong winds, when the power lines short-circuited. About 30 households lost power. Nearby residents heard a loud bang, and one neighbour reported seeing smoke from the box. Taiwan Power Company crews attended the scene and restored supply at about 16:10, roughly twenty minutes after the outage began. The report does not describe any fire spreading beyond the equipment, and it does not mention any injuries.
Contributing factors
Strong gusts as a typhoon approached the area. The reported cause is a short circuit in the power lines during the gusts. The report does not describe the condition of the box or its internal failure mode.
Lessons learned
- Inspect and secure overhead lines, connections and distribution boxes before a typhoon reaches the area.
- After high-wind events, check distribution equipment for arcing, smoke and enclosure damage, not only for supply loss.
- Keep rapid-response crews and clear public warnings ready so that faults in storm conditions are isolated and restored quickly.
