What happened
A fire broke out in an electrical substation inside Plaza City Center, a shopping plaza in Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, Mexico, on Saturday 17 October 2026. The substation is on Bogotá street, a pedestrian-only area within the plaza. Firefighters from the Centro municipal civil protection unit, working with state emergency personnel from the Instituto de Protección Civil del Estado de Tabasco, brought the fire under control before midday. Restaurants and shops near the site were evacuated while crews worked.
No injuries were reported, and no one needed pre-hospital care, although an ambulance attended. After the fire was extinguished, the equipment was cooled to prevent the flames from reigniting. It was the second incident in three days in the commercial area, following a fire at a restaurant in the plaza on 14 October.
Contributing factors
Not reported. The cause of the fire and the specific equipment involved have not been stated.
Lessons learned
- Inspect and maintain substations in multi-tenant commercial buildings, including thermal checks of transformers and switchgear, because fires there can affect nearby occupied space.
- Plan evacuation zones and isolation procedures for substations located in pedestrian or crowded areas.
- Rehearse post-fire cooling and reignition checks with emergency services so equipment is made safe before it is returned to service.
