What happened
Firefighters from Iași attended a fire that broke out in an industrial hall within the grounds of the Iași thermal power plant in Romania. The flames were visible on the first floor and covered about 1,000 square metres, in a hall of roughly 5,000 square metres. The Iași County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations 'Mihail Sturdza' mobilised seven fire appliances from two firefighting detachments. Crews used water and foam appliances, a rescue and high-access vehicle, a first aid team and a personnel transport vehicle.
The power supply was interrupted for the duration of the operation. The published headline reports that a transformer caught fire, although the article body does not describe the transformer's location or its role in the fire. No victims had been reported at the time of publication. The public was advised to avoid the area and keep clear of electrical installations.
Contributing factors
The source does not state the cause of the fire. The headline links the fire to a transformer catching fire, but the article body does not confirm this.
Lessons learned
- Fire walls, oil containment and separation distances around transformers limit the spread of a fire into adjacent halls, cable routes and control rooms.
- Isolation and de-energisation procedures should be rehearsed with fire crews so that they can work safely once supplies are cut.
- Access routes and water and foam supplies around large industrial halls on energy sites should be kept clear and tested.
