What happened
A fire broke out on Saturday 4 July 2020 at a power station in Ahvaz, a city in southwestern Iran, according to Iranian media reports carried by VOA. The blaze affected a transformer at the station. Firefighters put the fire out, and electricity was restored after partial outages, according to a spokesman for the state-run power company TAVANIR, quoted by the semiofficial news agency Tasnim. The report came amid a string of other fires and explosions at facilities across Iran in the same period, although those involved other types of site. No injuries and no cause for the transformer fire were reported.

Lessons learned
- Substation transformers should have fire suppression, fire separation and firefighter access designed in, because a single transformer fire can interrupt supply to many customers.
- Operators should keep spare or mobile transformer capacity and pre-planned switching procedures so that supply can be restored quickly after a transformer fire.
- Dissolved gas analysis and temperature monitoring can reveal developing transformer faults before they progress to fire.
