A transformer exploded in the area of Main Street and Old Town Road in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States, on the afternoon of Tuesday 5 October 2021, according to officials. First responders were sent to the area at around 1.30 pm. Arriving crews closed the area to traffic in both directions and confirmed that a transformer had exploded. United Illuminating reported an outage beginning at 1.25 pm that affected customers in the 06606 and 06611 zip codes in Bridgeport and Trumbull.

About 2,600 customers were without power, and the estimated restoration time was 5.30 pm the same day. There was no immediate word on any injuries. The report was published as a developing story, and the cause of the explosion was not reported.

  1. A distribution transformer failure can cut supply across neighbouring areas and close nearby roads until the equipment is made safe.
  2. Early coordination between the utility and emergency services helps crews confirm the event and manage traffic.
  3. An early restoration estimate should be treated as provisional while a report is still developing, and updated when more is known.
