Transformer explosion causes fire and traffic-light outages in Palm Beach

Feb 2024Published 3 Oct 2026

According to the Palm Beach Police Department, a transformer blew up in the town of Palm Beach, Florida, on 19 February 2024, causing power outages to traffic lights and a structure fire. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded and put the fire out. Police said Chilean Avenue was closed while crews worked. Town officials said emergency vehicles had to operate near County Road and South Ocean Boulevard, between Chilean and Worth Avenue, which delayed traffic. Officials said the area had reopened by 8.38 pm and traffic was moving again. The cause of the failure, any injuries, and the extent of damage were not reported.

Not reported.

  1. A transformer failure can start a nearby structure fire and knock out traffic signals at the same time.
  2. Road closures around the scene should be coordinated so emergency access and traffic can be restored once the fire is out.
  3. Operators should treat an unexplained transformer failure as an event that needs a prompt cause review, even when early public reports give few technical details.
