What happened
On 20 April 2025, the offshore supply vessel Glomar Venture hit the base of an offshore wind turbine in the Dutch North Sea, about 15 miles offshore from Callantsoog. Two crew members were injured. The Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution received a medical evacuation request at about 7 am local time. Rescue vessels took the injured crew to Den Helder, where they were transferred to hospital by ambulance. The vessel, which had a crew of eight, was later escorted to the Port of Den Helder. An official investigation is underway. The source does not name the wind farm, report damage to the turbine, or state a cause.
Contributing factors
The cause has not been reported. An official investigation is underway.
Lessons learned
- Vessel movements close to turbine foundations should be planned and monitored so that a strike on the base is treated as a foreseeable offshore risk, not only as a navigation incident.
- Medical evacuation arrangements for crews working near offshore turbines should be ready to move injured people to a shore hospital without delay.
- Voyage, communications and approach records should be preserved after a vessel contacts a turbine, because the cause may not be known until an investigation reports.
