Transformer explosion reported to have cut power to Hart Bridge in Jacksonville

Sept 2024Published 2 Oct 2026

A local news headline on 27 September 2024 said a tower camera showed a transformer explosion that knocked out power to the Hart Bridge in Jacksonville as Hurricane Helene moved in. The full report could not be read. It is not known where the transformer was, how wide the outage was, how long power was out, or whether anyone was hurt.

The headline places the event as Helene approached. It does not say the storm caused the failure, and no other cause is reported.

  1. During a named storm, operators of supplies to bridges and other critical crossings should confirm backup power and a clear restoration plan.
  2. A headline does not establish cause. Record weather, protection operation and restoration time when a transformer fails.
  3. Early public notices should say what is known and what is not yet confirmed.
