Fire at Al-Bakr substation causes southern Iraq power outage
July 2023Published 2 Oct 2026
What happened
A fire occurred at the 132 kV Al-Bakr substation in Basra on 30 July 2023 at about 12:40. The Ministry of Electricity said the fire disconnected transmission lines between the southern and central regions, caused frequency oscillations and tripped generation units, and led to a complete power outage in the southern region. Restoration was reported to be under way, with normal operation expected within a few hours. The technical cause of the fire was not reported.
Contributing factors
The ministry said the power system was already under stress from fuel shortages, high demand and extreme heat. It did not state that these conditions caused the fire.
Lessons learned
- A fire at a single transmission substation can separate regions and trip generation across a stressed grid.
- Operators should plan rapid restoration of tripped units and reconnection of lines after a regional separation.
- Heat, fuel shortage and high demand raise the consequence of an unexpected technical incident and should be treated in contingency plans.
