Home battery storage explosion linked to wall collapse in Germany

What happened
At about 2 p.m., the fire safety department in the Wernges district was alerted to smoke from a two-family house. When police arrived, local firefighters were already there and could not detect a fire. An explosion had occurred and the home's eastern wall had collapsed. The explosion has been linked to a 30 kWh storage unit in the basement. Preliminary findings suggested a technical defect may have caused it. The homeowners left the house on their own.
Police reported minor injuries to three people: the homeowner, a resident and a neighbour. Damage was estimated in the mid-six-figure range and the house was then uninhabitable. Firefighters fenced the area and supported the building against further collapse. The battery manufacturer was not disclosed.
Contributing factors
Police said preliminary findings suggested a technical defect may have caused the explosion. No manufacturer was named, and no confirmed cause has been reported.
Lessons learned
- A home storage unit can be linked to a structural explosion even when responders find no active fire on arrival.
- Occupants may have to leave before firefighters arrive, so a clear way out matters.
- After a suspected storage explosion, the building may need temporary support and may be uninhabitable.
