What happened
On 13 August 2024, a small transformer fire was reported at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Burke County, Georgia. Georgia Power said an emergency alert was issued at 12 p.m. ET for Units 1 and 2 after a fire in a transformer that supplies electricity to one of the units. The company said the fire was fully extinguished and the alert was lifted at 2:36 p.m. ET.
It said there was no threat to public safety and no injuries, and that there was no risk to the reactor units under the alert or to the plant. A US Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesperson said the fire did not affect the plant's operating systems.
Lessons learned
- A small transformer fire at a generating site can still justify a formal emergency alert until the effect on unit supplies is confirmed.
- Operators should state promptly whether operating systems and the public are affected, and when an alert is lifted.
- Clear wording on whether the public needs to act limits alarm while the event is still being assessed.
