Transformer fire cuts power in Kato Patisia

What happened

A fire broke out on Thursday in a power transformer belonging to DEDDIE near the railway lines, close to the junction of Liosion Street and Stratigou Kallari Street in Kato Patisia, Athens. Fire crews responded, and DEDDIE shut off power to the area as a precaution. Traffic police diverted vehicles at the Liosion and Stratigou Kallari junction and at Liosion and Kourtidou. The cause of the fire was not reported.

Lessons learned

1. A roadside distribution transformer needs a clear way for the operator to cut local supply as soon as a fire is reported, even when the cause is not yet known.
2. Fire crews and traffic police may both be needed, so access and junction diversions should be arranged together.
3. Early public reports should say whether the outage was a precaution and should not state a cause that has not been given.
