Third battery fire at a storage site in Thuringia

What happened
On 11 August 2024, fire services attended a lithium battery fire at a solar and storage service company in Thuringia, Germany. It was the third battery fire at the site in two months, after incidents on 7 June and 30 June. Police again suspect a technical defect. The company later said the batteries were being held temporarily for disposal, and that the latest fire affected individual pallets rather than a container, unlike the June incidents.
Fumes and smoke slightly injured an employee, who is reported to have moved the burning unit clear with a forklift. Damage from the latest fire is estimated at 30,000 euros. Heavy smoke led to a warning for residents to keep windows and doors closed until the following day. The first fire was estimated at about 700,000 euros, and firefighting water from that operation was reported to contain toxic hydrofluoric acid and had to be disposed of at high cost.
The fire service then allowed the second fire to burn down in a controlled way. The extent of damage from the second fire was not reported.
Contributing factors
Police suspect a technical defect. The company said the batteries were intended for disposal and were in temporary storage. The precise failure mechanism has not been reported.
