Power cable fire in Rajepur cuts supply to about half a dozen villages

What happened

On a Friday morning in the Ganga Paar area of Rajepur, Farrukhabad district, a power cable on a pole faulted and caught fire. Supply to about half a dozen villages stopped. Sparks from the cable fell near shops by the pole, alarming shopkeepers and residents. Villagers informed the local electricity sub-centre and the supply was switched off. Staff were sent to the site and repair of the cable was started. The report said repair was still under way and did not confirm that supply had been restored.

Contributing factors

The fault was reported, as information rather than as a confirmed finding, to have followed overload on the cable on the pole. The local electricity official said the cable had burned because of the fault. No other cause was reported.

Lessons learned

1. A distribution cable fault beside shops can throw sparks into a public area, so reported faults near people should be isolated at once.
2. Notice from residents to the local sub-centre was what led to the supply being switched off; that route needs to stay clear and fast.
3. After a cable fire, track repair through to confirmed restoration rather than treating dispatch of a crew as the end of the incident.
