Fire destroys a Ladysmith municipality substation, cutting power in several areas

What happened

A substation on Jantha Street in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, operated by the Alfred Duma Municipality, caught fire on 4 January 2023. Reporting said the fire destroyed one of the municipality's substations, described as one of its primary switch-houses, and caused power cuts in the Progress/Main Road area, Rose Park, Leonardsville, Acaciavale and Hillside. The municipality said it was sourcing contractors to repair the substation and that investigations were under way, while its technical team had tried to restore power in some affected areas.
