Fire at Munhava substation causes blackout in Beira

What happened

A fire destroyed much of the electricity substation in the Munhava neighbourhood of Beira on a Saturday morning. The publicly owned electricity company EDM said the resulting power cut left more than 160,000 of its clients without supply. Alternative power kept key sites, including Beira Central Hospital and the city's international airport, operating. After the fire was brought under control, technical teams worked to restore normal supplies. The causes of the fire were not known at the time of the report.

Lessons learned

1. Alternative supplies for hospitals, airports and other critical sites limit the effect of a substation fire.
2. Restoration planning should start as soon as the fire is under control.
3. Early reports may not identify the cause, so operators should not treat the first public account as a completed investigation.
