Transformer fire disrupts supply at Blue Hills power plant

Bahamas Power and Light reported a transformer fire at its Blue Hills power plant, at Blue Hill Road and Soldier Road in Nassau, on 22 September 2026. Police said Fire Services were alerted shortly before 6 am and sent two fire engines. The blaze was confined to a transformer in the southwestern section of the property. That transformer, which a private electrical company manages, was extensively damaged before the fire was extinguished. The fire disrupted electricity supply in New Providence. BPL said the site was isolated and crews then worked to restore supply. The source does not state how widespread the outage was or when supply was fully restored.

A site manager told Fire Services that a lightning strike may have caused the fire. That remains a suspicion. BPL said it was assessing how to protect equipment and reduce the effect of storms on customers. No confirmed cause has been reported.
