Electrical fire at Bahamas substation cuts power to thousands

An electrical fire broke out at Bahamas Power and Light's Baillou Hills substation, an 11KV facility, on a Saturday night at around 9.45pm. Smoke was detected and staff on duty attempted to extinguish the fire before calling Police Fire Services, who arrived and put out the blaze. The fire caused power outages of up to 12 hours across several southwestern New Providence neighbourhoods, including Fire Trail, Carmichael, Golden Gates, Pride Estates, Bel Air, portions of Harold Road, Yellow Elder, Stapledon and Millennium Gardens. Power was restored to all affected customers by 10am the following morning. The utility stated preliminary investigations suggested the fire was caused by equipment failure, with a full investigation launched and foul play not suspected. This was reported as the fourth fire at a company plant within a week, prompting public criticism of ageing infrastructure and utility management.

A union representative publicly stated that transmission and distribution equipment at the company was ageing and had exceeded its serviceable life, attributing recurring failures to a lack of investment in replacing old machinery.
