An explosion was reported at a substation in Linden, in the Johannesburg area of South Africa, on the evening of 23 August 2017, shortly before 6pm. The explosion was reported to have triggered a large fire, pictures of which residents shared on social media. By around 6.30pm power had gone out, with Linden, Victory Park, Roosevelt Park and parts of Emmarentia affected. A local resident said the unit involved was a standby or backup unit rather than a feeder unit, and attributed the explosion to theft of equipment and cabling from the substation causing a short circuit. No official cause was confirmed at the time of reporting, and injuries, fire service response and restoration times were not reported.
