An electricity substation in Lamosanghu, in Sindupalchok district, Nepal, caught fire on 27 October 2019. Personnel from the Nepal Army, the Armed Police Force and local residents from Chautara Municipality worked to control the blaze, with a fire engine from Chautara Municipality sent to the site. According to the District Police Office chief, efforts to extinguish the fire were made harder because fuel stored at the substation also ignited. The cause had not been established at the time of reporting and police were still looking into it. Reporting is limited to one short article: injuries, equipment damage and any resulting power outage were not reported.
Fuel stored at the substation is reported to have caught fire, making the blaze harder to control, according to the District Police Office chief. No other contributing factors were reported and no cause had been established.
- Flammable materials such as fuel should be stored in dedicated fire-rated locations away from live substation equipment to limit escalation.
- At remote sites without an industrial fire capability, pre-agreed arrangements with military, police and municipal fire services help speed an effective response.
