The New Era substation in Springs, on the corner of South Main Reef Road, caught fire at around 4pm on 16 February 2020. Firefighters arrived quickly and doused the flames, although smoke continued to come from inside the structure and part of the roof on one side appeared at risk of collapse. A firefighter at the scene was reported as saying the entire main frame of the substation had been burnt. The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage were not confirmed at the time of reporting, and emergency personnel on scene could not say when supply would be restored. Based on comments posted on the local newspaper's social media page, the affected areas were said to include Geduld, Strubenvale, Edelweiss, Petersfield, the central business district, Casseldale, Largo and Dal Fouche.
