Blades fracture on 20 MW turbine prototype at Mingyang test centre, Hainan

EIR-0751

Provisional entry. Published from first reports. This entry is rechecked automatically and updated when more sources appear. Next update: 17 September 2026.

Two blades broke off a 20 MW offshore wind turbine prototype, reported to be Mingyang Smart Energy's MySE18.X-20MW model, while it was undergoing extreme condition testing at the company's large wind turbine test centre in Lingao, Hainan, China. The turbine, an offshore model, had been installed at the onshore test site in August 2024. Reports in China said the blade failure happened on 6 December 2024, and images of the fractured blades circulated online before the manufacturer issued a public statement on 13 December. Mingyang said the turbine was a newly developed prototype still in the testing phase, not yet marketed or mass-produced, and did not specify which prototype had suffered the failure. The company said its preliminary analysis of test data indicated the turbine encountered extreme, abnormal conditions during the test that caused blade loads to exceed the design load limit, leading to fracture. It said no personnel at the test site were harmed.

According to the manufacturer's preliminary statement, the turbine encountered extreme and abnormal conditions during testing that caused blade loads to exceed the design limit value, resulting in fracture. No independent analysis has been reported.

  1. Prototype testing under extreme conditions is part of validating new large-capacity turbine designs before commercial deployment, and structural failures during such tests should be expected and planned for.
  2. Test sites should have arrangements that keep personnel clear of rotating prototype machinery during extreme load runs, so that a blade fracture does not become an injury event.
  3. Manufacturers benefit from clear protocols for prompt public communication when prototype failures occur, particularly when images circulate before any official statement.
  4. Findings from extreme condition test failures should feed into refined design margins for low-probability load cases before serial production begins.
