Substation equipment failure sparks fire and evacuation at Singapore hotel

What happened

An electricity flashover, an abnormal electrical discharge, occurred at a substation located on the ground floor of Carlton Hotel in Bras Basah Road, Singapore. The flashover, caused by equipment failure, ignited a fire within the substation's switch room. Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions and smoke was seen coming from a door at the rear of the hotel, with a strong smell of burning plastic. The equipment failure also caused a power outage affecting several parts of central Singapore.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force responded and confirmed the fire was contained within the switch room and extinguished using fire extinguishers. About 1,000 people were evacuated from the hotel as a precaution. Power was restored to most affected areas within minutes, though the hotel itself remained without electricity for several hours. No injuries were reported and the hotel stated no part of the building itself was damaged.
