What happened
Recharge News reported that a turbine collapse occurred at the 167MW Kent Hills wind farm in New Brunswick, Canada. According to the report, an investigation found 'deficiencies' in the original foundation design and uncovered cracks, and the developer, TransAlta, plans to replace 50 units at the site. The report does not give the date of the collapse, the sequence of events, or the number of turbines affected by the collapse itself.
Contributing factors
Recharge News reports that deficiencies in the original foundation design were identified after the investigation, and that the probe uncovered cracks. The cause has not been confirmed by any further published source.
Lessons learned
- Independently review foundation design calculations for wind turbines, particularly after any collapse or structural failure.
- Inspect foundations and structural connections across the fleet after a single turbine failure, rather than assuming the rest of the site is sound.
- Keep design and engineering review records accessible so that root causes can be traced and remedial programmes scoped quickly.
More lessons on structural integrity and turbines, design, standards and commissioning, from every incident on the register.
