What happened
On the evening of Sunday 1 November 2026, a fire was reported in one unit of the Boulenouar wind farm in the Dakhlet Nouadhibou region, in the hinterland of Nouadhibou, Mauritania. The source places the fire at an installation in the Souweissiya area near the locality of Boulenouar. Photographs and videos shared online showed flames coming from the unit, according to the news sites Al-Akhbar and Al-Thawabit. The article reports that no official statement on the origin of the fire or any damage had been made overnight, and that the number of turbines affected and whether anyone was hurt were not known.
The farm, rated at approximately 100 MW, is connected to the grid serving Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Residents said they feared the fire could spread to other equipment and disrupt supply. SOMELEC and the Ministry of Energy had not commented when the article was published. The article links the incident to a recent series of fires on poles, transformers and distribution substations in Nouakchott.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire has not been established. The source says a technical investigation is expected to determine the cause and the effect on the farm's output.
Lessons learned
- Wind turbine fires can spread to other equipment on a shared site, so operators should keep fire detection, isolation and emergency response plans up to date.
- Grid-connected wind farms should give clear and timely public information after an incident, since the absence of official statements can fuel concern about supply.
- Where a fire affects a turbine connected to a wider grid serving major cities, operators and grid managers should coordinate quickly on isolation and supply continuity.
More lessons on detection and monitoring, outages, backup supply and restoration, electrical protection and isolation, from every incident on the register.
