Transformer fire cuts power to Teyarett district in Nouakchott

2026Published 27 Oct 2026Responsible editor: Chief Editor

The company Somelec announced a fire in a transformer housing opposite a shop in the Teyarett district of Nouakchott North. The fire cut the electricity supply to the neighbourhood. In a statement, the company said its initial diagnosis pointed to an increase in electrical load combined with high temperatures as the likely cause. Civil protection teams brought the fire under control. Somelec said the incident was local and not linked to the main distribution substations.

The company said its director general visited the site and ordered faster intervention to restore supply as soon as possible. Somelec apologised to residents for the unplanned outage and said its technical teams were continuing to work to restore service.

The company's initial diagnosis, not yet confirmed, points to increased electrical load and high temperatures. No other factors were reported.

  1. Monitor transformer loading closely during periods of high temperature, particularly in dense urban areas where demand grows quickly.
  2. Inspect transformer housings and ventilation regularly so that heat cannot build up around equipment under load.
  3. Keep rapid isolation and restoration plans ready so that a local fault does not leave residents without power for longer than necessary.
