What happened
On 4 January 2015, firefighters from Thornwood, assisted by crews from Hawthorne, Valhalla, Pleasantville, Chappaqua and Yonkers, worked to contain a fire at a Con Edison substation on Commerce Street in Thornwood, New York. The fire was recorded in a photograph caption republished by Lohud on 4 January 2024 as part of its Today in History series, which reused a photograph by The Journal News. The caption does not describe the cause of the fire, the equipment involved, the extent of damage, whether supply was interrupted, or whether anyone was injured.
No other account of the incident was identified in the source. Because the item is a retrospective photo gallery rather than a contemporaneous report, the facts here rest on a single caption and should be treated as limited.

Lessons learned
- Substations in populated areas should have pre-incident plans shared with neighbouring fire services, because this fire needed mutual aid from several fire departments.
- Retrospective media can be the only public record of an incident, so operators should keep their own dated records of cause, equipment, outage impact and response.
- Operators should record the cause, damaged equipment and supply impact of substation fires at the time, so that later reviews and public accounts are not limited to a photograph caption.
More lessons on fire suppression and firefighting, outages, backup supply and restoration, from every incident on the register.
