At about 10 pm on Friday 26 February 2021, an apparent transformer explosion triggered a large power outage in Moiliili, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. More than 3,700 customers were without power immediately after the explosion. About an hour later, about 300 customers still had not had their power restored. Several power lines were left hanging over Date Street, and officials urged the public to stay away from the area. HECO did not release an official cause. The report does not describe the transformer, any damage to it, injuries, or when supply was fully restored.

  1. After an apparent transformer failure that leaves lines hanging, keep the public clear of the area until the lines are made safe.
  2. Treat early reports of the cause as provisional until the utility confirms what failed.
  3. Record how many customers remain without power as restoration proceeds, so the scale of the outage is clear.
