A high-voltage substation of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand caught fire in Nong Chok district of Bangkok during heavy rain. The operator said transformers erupted in flames at 10.09am, cutting off power to parts of the district. Fire crews took about an hour to put the fire out. Power was reported restored at 11.03am. There were no reported injuries.
Contributing factors
Police said the fire occurred during a heavy downpour, which might have caused a short circuit. That has not been confirmed.
Lessons learned
Storm conditions at high-voltage substations should be treated as a plausible trigger until the cause is confirmed.
Prompt firefighting and isolation can keep an outage short even when equipment is damaged.
Operators should record weather, protection operation and damage before drawing conclusions about moisture or short circuits.
